The Importance of Social Casework

 

        Social casework is one of the important method and technique of professional social work. It aims to find individual solutions to individual’s problems. The focus of social casework is on an individual. People often faced with difficulties due to personal or environmental factors, leading to their malfunctioning and consequent maladjustment in society. The caseworker also known as the social worker thoroughly understands the person and problems and helps him to balance himself to strengthen out his difficulties. Social casework is an art of helping individual to work out better social relationship and adjustment, it is a method of helping people individual by individual, to tackle effectively the various problems confronting them and that it is a way of helping individual to use their own resources both material and psychological for the treatment and prevention of personal and social problems.

 

        The social casework profession is focused on one primary goal: "to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty."

Values Maintained in Casework are:

✅Every individual has the right to self-determination.

✅Every individual is the primary concern of society, has potential for and the right to growth.

✅Every individual, in turn, has to contribute to the society's development by assuming his social responsibility.

✅The individual and society in which one lives are interdependent.

✅Basic human needs have to be met by services which are not dependent upon in accord either to moral behavior or to race, nationality, caste, etc.

 

➰ The practice aims at reducing social problems and improving social functioning. An individual performs several roles in the society. Problems might occur when there is a conflict between the roles or stress on a certain role which the individual finds difficult to manage. Individual forms the microscopic part of the entire community. Being the root of society, an individual's thought and ideologies influence the society as a whole. Casework uses this perspective to create change and functionality in the society as a whole and casework has been one of the oldest and most frequently used methods in Social Work.
